Biographical Sketch

Role of a Judge in Judging Competitions at Camera Club Meetings

To objectively guide the audience and makers through a reading of moments captured in time, space and light and to assess their relative merit taking into consideration presentation, craftsmanship, composition, creativity, how well a sense of the moment is communicated to the viewer, and the purpose of the competition.

Role of a Judge in Judging Other Types of Competitions

To objectively read moments captured in time, space and light and to assess their relative merit taking into consideration presentation, craftsmanship, composition, creativity, how well a sense of the moment is communicated to the viewer, and the purpose of the competition.

Considerations

Presentation - Is the image appropriately presented in terms of size, cropping, and media (paper and type, transparency, projection) used to present the image? Does the image stand out from, not compete with any matting and/or framing employed?

Craftsmanship - Do the focus, exposure, contrast, depth of field, techniques employed, and presentation assist in conveying a sense of the moment captured?

Composition - Do all elements in the picture space and their illumination contribute to conveying a sense of the moment captured?
Do all of the elements in the picture space work together to convey a sense of the moment captured?
Does the orientation (horizontal, vertical) and vantage point from which the image was taken assist in conveying a sense of the moment captured?

Creativity - Does the viewer sense that he or she is participating in an extraordinary moment captured in time, space, and light?
