Fred has been a serious amateur photographer off and on for over 25 years. His first photographic experience that created the life long interest was in 8th grade shop class, where he made and used a pin-hole camera. Watching the print "come up" in the darkroom developing tray for the first time had him hooked. His next big opportunity for serious learning came at UNC Chapel Hill, where he worked in the University photo-lab for 2 years while a college student. There he worked in the darkroom, the studio, the copy room and in the field, using various 35mm SLR, medium format, 4X5 and large specialty camera equipment. For many years after he used Olympus OM2 and OM4 cameras with Olympus lenses, mainly due to their light weight and size compared to Nikon and Canon equipment at the time. He also used Hasselblad medium format equipment when he wanted the extra weight for exercise. He had a home darkroom for many years, but now it is all in storage. Once his old eyes started hampering his focusing, and his financial situation improved, he converted to Nikon auto focus SLRs and lenses and later added Nikon digital cameras as well. His photographic subjects are fairly eclectic and include family portraits, landscapes, nature/wildlife (flowers and birds primarily), abstracts and macro-photography.
