Mary has been a member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS) since 2003, and has served in several Board positions including Membership Chair and Forums Chair. She began photographing “seriously” in 2002, and considers herself to be an enthusiastic amateur photographer. Mary has received no formal training in photography, but has taken workshops with Jim Steele, Jim Clark, Tony Sweet, Joe Miller, and most recently participated in the Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant workshop in New Brunswick, Canada.
Mary was awarded the NVPS “Novice Photographer of the Year” award in 2005, and was also honored with the NVPS “Novice Monochrome Print of the Year” in 2005. Mary was recently awarded the Nikon Sponsor’s Choice Award for an image juried into the 2007 Meadowlark Nature Photography Expo. Mary’s work has recently been published in West Virginia Magazine, and she currently has work on display at The Art League in Alexandria, Virginia.
Mary uses Nikon 35 mm equipment (Nikon D200, and Nikon F100 camera bodies, with Nikon f4 200 mm macro, Tamron 24-105 and Nikon 70-300 mm lenses). She shoots color slides in additional to digital (preferring Fuji Velvia 50 or 100). She specializes in nature, flower, and macro photography. She uses a tripod for everything (carbon Gitzo tripod, with a Really Right Stuff--BH55 ball head).
Mary lectures and judges competitions and exhibits throughout the state. Her program, “What If…?”, explores various techniques for creating your personal photographic vision.
